About

Eternal Thanks
(Liberation and Veterans Day)

On May 8th, Norway marks Liberation and Veterans Day – honoring the men and women who have served to protect the nation’s freedom and safety.

Traditionally, the focus has been on veterans from WWII, but today’s veterans are a much broader group: soldiers who have served in international missions as well as domestic operations. Despite their vital role, public understanding of who veterans are – and the burdens their families have shouldered – remains limited. Behind every soldier who serves is a network of family and loved ones making quiet sacrifices of their own. While veterans often receive recognition, the devotion and quiet resilience of those keeping life together at home are far less acknowledged.

So this year, the Norwegian Armed Forces used Liberation Day not only to honor veterans, but also to celebrate the unsung heroes on the home front.
